Happy together: Were they really in love?

Can you call it love that is stubbornness and greed, filled with foolishness? There was a time in my youth when I truly believed love is that I have to take as much as I give. That young love, filled with tears and hurts, while I dragged myself to be loved and waited like a fool, it may be called love, but also an expression of my desires.

Yiu-fai and Po-wing loved like the hot summer in Buenos Aires, fought that much, and broke up. Yiu-fai’s love is kind but also blunt at the same time, but Po-wing’s love is light but also desperate. The movie shows their passionate past and painful breakup from the beginning. Po-wing brought many different men to the tango bar where Yui-fai was working, like being shown up. It seemed like he teased Yiu-Fai; in fact, Po-wing might want Yiu-Fai to feel jealous and angry. Since Po-wing got hurt, they lived together again and became a couple again, but their relationship was still unstable. Po-wing is like a child who never grows. You can see from the scenes when Po-wing squeezed himself into the small bed to sleep with Yiu-fai, whining to sick Yiu-fai that he is hungry, or being angry after he got caught going through all Yiu-fai’s belongings without permission. Besides that, Yiu-fai accepted Po-wing’s behaviour but was also disgusted. He hid Po-wing’s passport, afraid that Po-wing would run away, but after all, that was the reason he was the one who accepted the end of the relationship. By the way, Po-wing was the one who ran away as soon as he got better, but also left behind in the same place to cry and miss Yiu-Fai.

Perhaps Po-wing had some trust in Yiu-fai; even if he left for a while, Yiu-fai would be in the same place. But Yiu-fai stepped up above many tears and scars as he left. The tape recorded his cry and the trip alone to Iguazu Falls, where they promised to be together, and back to Hong Kong, where he would finally be free from Po-wing. On the other hand, Po-wing, who returned to Yiu-fai’s flat, realised Yiu-fai had left after he saw his passport in that empty place and decided to stay there to remember their happy memories in that tiny place.

Yiu-fai will not go back to Po-wing. It is the rule of love that gets hurt in the end as much as you put your passions. However, every scar gets healed. Therefore, we all can move forward. Even though getting hurt, that does not mean there was no happiness at that time. We have regrets because of happy memories. If we shake off those regrets and embrace the wounds we received, we will be able to grow more mentally and spiritually, and in that way, we will be able to have a more mature relationship.
